The surface mount technology have long replaced the old circuit construction method where in the electronic components are fitted into the holes specifically created on the circuit board with the use of wire leads. Surface mount technology usually produces circuit boards that are smaller and more compact that its counterpart. This is because lead is sparingly used in the whole process.
